Cliffhanger The Belinda Bennett Mysteries Book One Amy Saunders 9781482303728 Books

The beginning of this book is not too bad. The characters seemed very juvenile for having left school ten years earlier, but I put it down to a typo: two years instead of ten years. This became less interesting as they appeared to be about early twenties, and a little young even for that. As the book went on, the quality of the writing deteriorated. Descriptions of the actions of the characters began to show them as shallow and not clearly delineated. This lost the author a 5-star rating. The quality became very cutesy toward the end, with pages and pages of unnecessary descriptions of the relationship between the heroine and her brother and both of them with the detective. This book may appeal to junior high school students, but I think adults would be not only bored but impatient with the much too prolonged ending. The author lost a second star for inflicting me with my pet peeve: any author who uses the word "smirk" more than two times on a page or six times in the entire book loses a star. No exception.

Terrible grammar and unbelievable characters (all of whom seemed to have a pretty cavalier attitude regarding the murders of their friends) ruined what could have been a pretty decent mystery.
Socialite Belinda Kittredge, returning to her hometown, Portside, RI, expected fun, sun, and sugar cookies. There to oversee her twin brother, Kyle’s, renovation of their parents’ home, she is also reconnecting with old high school friends. Immediately, though, a decade-old tragedy, the death in a boating accident of a friend and almost-boyfriend, intrudes. At a party, she’s approached by Jeff, witness to the old death, who wants to ‘talk to her about it.’ She also finds herself pursued by a teenaged neighbor who had an old crush on her and seems to want to revive it.
When Jeff is found dead at the base of a cliff, Belinda knows something is amiss. She finds it hard to concentrate on it, however, because of the heat emitted by Bennett Tate, an ex-cop turned event security expert, who is asked by a friend on the local police force to keep an eye on her—a task he finds most pleasant.
Things go from bad to worse, and Belinda finds herself the target of some weird attempts on her life, her brother accused of murdering Jeff, and an old classmate still carrying a grudge over something that is ten years in the past.
You might assume Cliffhanger by Amy Saunders is one of those books that ends on a cliffhanger, with many—or at least the main—issues unresolved. Wrong. The author wraps everything up nicely. Turns out, the title refers to the situations the main character constantly finds herself in.
One complaint about the book. The author uses characters names frequently, and I do mean frequently. Belinda’s name opens the first two paragraphs, and I stopped counting how many times her name was used in that chapter at ten—it was more. It’s nice to know which character is which, but there has to be a better way than using their name; three or four times in one paragraph is way too many. At that frequency it’s not informative, it’s intrusive.
So, here’s a book with a fascinating couple of main characters, the requisite volume of sparks flying between them, and a fairly interesting plot—marred by names, names, names. I give it three stars, and cross my fingers that this author—who shows great promise—will notice this and institute corrective measures in future books.
Free can have a cliffside downside. Main character is supposedly late 20's, but acts like a teen. They are rich, live in a manse on the sea. Nothing, including the setting, is well-described. No sizzle, no snap, no quirky, no insight, nothing real. Kept falling asleep...finally read the last chapter to find out whodunit...ZZZZZZZ. Deleted from kindle. Didn't delete The Camilla Randall box set from Anne R. Allen which is 99 cents and is worth much more. Lots of sizzle, snap, quirk, descriptive prose, interesting settings. I had much rather spend .99 for a fun read than waste time and energy on a poorly edited sophomoric and soporific one.
If this is an example of how English grammar is (not) taught in public schools then it is time to cry for our country. This was more of a doodle than a book. Paragraphs did not contain contiguous thoughts. Huge chunks of the story were left out. Difficult to tell who was talking. No transitions from scene to scene. Wrong characters were occasionally used when the author apparently got confused about her own characters. Very immature and undeveloped story and characters. It makes me sad to see how far we have fallen.
I can't believe this book received so many 5 stars. Honestly this book and the characters all felt like they were in 7th grade. The big secrets of "I liked him" and "he broke up with his girlfriend". Just really juvenile stuff. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book. I don't think I will be able to finish it. The writing is deteriorating, the plot is deteriorating.
I have found some real jems in the no cost books, which have lead me to purchasing other books by the authors. This is not one of those. This isn't a well written book, the characters are not 28 year olds, they're 12 year olds. The stalker PI is just creepy, and the plot is so incredibly weak. Don't waste your precious reading time on this book or this author.
I got this book as an free offering to see if I would like the author's writing style. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. I managed to read about halfway through the second chapter, and said that's enough. The main character is an eighteen year old who is trying tosay she is all grown up just because she is of age. For me, it's still party In high school time. It's of no interest to this older reader. I will not look into other books by this author.
